Tuesday 10th July Strasbourg by train from Saverne

We were up and at it early. Train departing at 9.45. Quick breakfast of bread and marmite jam peanut butter and they were off. Girls got the tickets. Bargain 17euros return each. Journey time 25 minutes. We took advantage of the time by creaming and we were suddenly in the massive and bustling Strasbourg gare. Great glass fronted old building.

We headed for little France. Before we knew it we were standing on a bridge looking down a canal at houses out of a film set. The trouble was, this film set was round every corner. Every house every square every restaurant every church every bridge was a photo opportunity and dipstick had left the camera on Doucette.

We strolled for an hour along the canal towpath until it was time for a coffee. We headed across to a likely looking cafe which turned out to be an ice cream parlour. The crew were in heaven. I had coffee which I may say was probably the best coffee I have ever tasted with a lovely little biscuit. Apparently the crew tell me the ice cream was ok too.

We strolled toward the boat embankment quay to book a trip. We just had to stop at the bustling square for drinks. Utterly idyllic. Tony and I had a wheat beer erdinger. They were a touch lively and as I was ribbing tone about the 7 inches of head he had produced when pouring ( cannot believe I just wrote that) my full glass turned into a frothing volcanoe and he who had the last laugh laughed loudest as I desperately sucked at the oozing froth.

Tony and rose pondered on buying a hotel in the corner and got booking details. I suspect a future winter break trip is already being planned.

The boat was booked for 2pm and we enjoyed a lovely hour trip taking in the sites. Highlite may well have been the European courts of justice. A superb piece of modern architecture to rival the history of this most splendid city.

After alighting the tour boat We headed for the magnificent gothic cathedral which we just had to have a tour round.

We walked back to town to find another celebrated square and got caught in a thunderstorm. Took shelter in a dodgy shop and nearly bought a dodgy belt which would have gone down well with a dodgy Doggy coiffurer who entertained us with his Blowdry performance.

We had spotted the pecheurs quay on the boat trip and decided to head there for a meal We had a lovely couple of beers in the sunshine

But they did not do food. We were struggling again to find a suitable restaurant but rose suggested heading back to little France where we had started our day and seen some lovely restaurants. Suddenly the race was on again for a meal. Most restaurants open at 7 but the last train back to savern was at 8.25 so it was gonna be a rush. We walked back to town and got caught in a thunderstorm.

All worked out very nicely though and we got a table overlooking the canal in the very spot we had started our day with photos. With time constraints we settled for just a main course of steak and chips with Roquefort. Very nice meal sat at our beautiful restaurant looking over to the bridge and opposite very expensive restaurant while under the bridge 3 homeless drunks settle down on their cardboard with their loyal little dogs ever beside them and just yards away locals play table tennis in the park. The world is surely a bizarre place.

It had been a lovely meal in a gorgeous setting but now it was a race against time to make the train. A race we fortunately won with minutes to spare. We got back to Saverne and headed back to the boat and the girls kindly insisted that tone and I have a couple of drinks at the quayside bar which we had grown fond of yesterday, whilst they got themselves sorted. The bar was in the process of closing but stayed open especially for us. Nice touch.

We were all knackered so it was snifters and a reasonably early 11.30 bedtime.
